Tell your friends!!
Welcome to ancheathrurua.ie! We are a new bilingual website (you can switch language by clicking on the Irish or English version of this website) providing information and news about events, facilities and services for the Gaeltacht community of An Cheathrú Rua and for the people who visit there.
This site will continue to develop so, from small beginnings, we hope to see it grow to be as helpful as possible to you with information on events and services, whether you are a member of our community, a welcome guest or a future visitor. Most of all we wish this site to be interactive - you too can play an important role in this website with your contributions, information or feedback so please join in.
We bring our information not only in text form but also with photographs and videos or podcasts. Not only read about our festivals but watch them happening! The excellent articles and photographs about the history of An Cheathrú Rua will be complemented by slideshows of people and places as they lived and worked, going back to early last century.
Maybe you've been to An Cheathrú Rua before or maybe you're planning a trip. Or maybe you've never heard of us and just happened on this website! So who, what and where is An Cheathrú Rua? The other sections in this website will give answers in fuller detail to those questions but basically the village and townland of An Cheathrú Rua is situated on a peninsula in south Connemara 40 kilometres (25 miles) west from Galway city. Galway Bay to its south and two smaller bays on its east and west side, Cuan Chasla (Casla Bay) and Cuan an Fhir Mhóir (Great Man’s Bay), shelter it from the full force of the Atlantic.
In An Cheathrú Rua you are in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland. Small twisting roads radiating from its centre take you through stone-strewn landscapes and tiny fields before invariably ending up pleasingly at a beach or a beautiful rocky coastline. As this website develops we hope to introduce you to more and more of these natural delights, from the famous Blue-flagged Trá an Dóilín or Coral Beach to the panoramic bay views as you walk Cuileán’s narrow road circuit.
An Cheathrú Rua offers lots of options and we hope ancheathrurua.ie brings these to you for you to choose from.
The name 'An Cheahtrú Rua' is sometimes anglicised as Carraroe or Carrowroe, though it should be noted that 'An Cheathrú Rua' is the only official name.
