Walks on the wild side (or take a bike)

An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe) is a peninsula and is ideal for walking or strolling. We have selected five walks, but there are hundreds of possible routes to choose from. We have also inluded six cycling routes starting and finishing in the town.

"Siúlóid" means "walk" in Irish

Walk 1

Starting at the Main Street walk westward to the crossroads of An Rinn. Take the left turn and then take the second small road on the left and proceed to the seashore. Turn left and at the first beach you come to (Trá na Tismeána) turn left on the tarmac road. You are now heading north and proceed to the first turn on the right which you take. Continue until you come to a tee junction where you turn left, you are now once again on Bóthar an Chillín and are returning to your starting point. When walking on the seashore, be extremely careful and if you are on your own it would be advisable to carry a mobile phone.

Walk 2

Start in the village and turn northwards on bóthar Dhoire Fheárta, take the first left and continue on this road until very close to the sea and then take the next left. You are now returning to the main street where you will turn right. Do not follow the route of the road but turn right and you will descend towards Caladh Thaidhg. At the lake there is a very small road  on your left proceed to take this and as you climb look behind you to take in the view. As you come to the tee junction take a left and return to the village. 6.1km

Walk 3

Leaving the main street walk south on Bóthar an Chillín and take the first left onto Bóthar Chnoc an Phobail and ascend the hill. Continue walking through An Caorán Mór and An Gleann Mór until you pass the pier at an Sruthán . Here you meet the main road into An Cheathrú Rua, turn left and continue into An Cheathrú Rua village. This is not the most suitable walk with small children as there is no footpath on the main road. 5.9km

Walk 4

Leaving the main street walk westwards to Trá an Dóilín. Conttinue northwards along the beach and seashore until you come to a small pier. The road from this pier connects with the main street. Be careful on the sea shore and if you are on your own make sure you have a mobile phone. 6km

Walk 5

Leave the main street and head south past the Secondary school taking the first left after that. The incline is steep, but the view from the top is spectacular. Keep to the left at the first junction and then veer right towards Trá an Chaorán Mhóir at the next junction. You will then head south along the sea shore from Trá an Chaorán Mhóir passing Trá Bharr a’ Doire and Trá an Chaoráin Bhig and then coming to a small pier, at this point you need to turn North and back onto the road which will take you back to the village. When walking on the seashore, be extremely careful and if you are on your own it would be advisable to carry a mobile phone.
