Mayor of Galway in An Cheathrú Rua

The Mayor of Galway, Michael Maher, presented certificates to over 80 schoolchildren from the areas of An Cheathrú Rua, Cois Fharraige, Ros Muc and Leitir Mealláin in Leabharlann na Ceathrún Rua on Wednesday, 12 October. The children had taken part in and completed a Summer Reading Challenge.

Before the presentation the children whose ages ranged from 1 to 13, were treated to a circus in the library, which was appropriate as the challenge theme was “Circus Stars”. This challenge is run on  a national basis in libraries each year.

“We went to schools before the beginning of summer and we set the challenge for the kids to read six books during the period,” said local librarian Mairéad Ní Chatháin. “When they had this done they had to write a small report about the books and hand it in to the library.”

Although directed at reading rather than in any language Mairéad was impressed at the amount of Irish books taken out for the project. “Lots of books were taken out about zoos and animals.” Teachers were more than happy with the project, said Mairéad as they found the children were practised at reading when they came back from holidays. Leabharlann na Ceathrún Rua itself has been involved in the challenge since it opened ten eyars ago.

During his speech Mayor Maher praised the work of the children and the importance of reading. It had a double benefit too of drawing parents into the challenge as well.

Another body, Clár Críochnú Scoile Conamara Thiar Theas also became involved in the project and used the library’s facilities to run reading sessions during the summer. They also sponsored “goody bags” for all the children at the presentation.

Attending the ceremony too were Pádraig Mac Mathúna, Galway County Librarian and Galway senior executive librarian Peadar Ó Coineen.

A special presentation was also made to former Carraroe librarian Peige Uí Thuathail for her years of service to the library before her retirement.
