Construction work on An Cheathrú Rua’s new childcare facility is almost complete. A former factory in Údarás na Gaeilge’s industrial estate has been revamped completely to become a state-of-the-art resource. Údarás na Gaeilge predict that the centre will be ready by the beginning of November and that advertisements for the post of manager and staff will be published “within a fortnight.”
At present over 20 children have registered for places. The centre can accommodate 60.
The Naíonra Mhic Dara childcare facility at An Cuileán will not be reopening after Christmas from when it will become part of the new centre.
News of the project’s progress was welcomed by the childcare committee. “We appreciate and are grateful to both the Department of the Gaeltacht and Údarás na Gaeilge for the work done,” said a spokesperson.
Photographs of the site show the advanced state of the building work. Underfloor heating has been installed and floors have yet to be put down. The very large 35-room complex embraces all environment friendly features and technologies, including solar panels, sensor lighting and rain harvesting. The large number of rooms include a milk-preparation unit for the children as well as a changing room.
The complex caters for children from less than one-year to 12 years of age. Parents who are interested in havign their children regisitered are asked to call 091 869750.
Comhar Naíonra na Gaeltachta will provide management services at the facility.
The project has been funded with a €500,000 contribution from the Department and another €200,000 grant from Údarás na Gaeltachta with the local community committed to contribute a further €200,000. The organisation POBAL has also agreed to provide administration funding.
The childcare committee is still fundraising for this project and says it welcomes contributions and support from all sources.
