An Cheathrú Rua has one of the highest rates of stomach cancer in Ireland.
This is according to a report released by the National Cancer Registry and has been investigated since by Comharchumann Mhic Dara.
The Comharchumann was in contact with The Health Services Executive and the Doctor of Public Health has revealed she has asked for a national review of the rates of stomach cancer and why it is so high in An Cheathrú Rua.
It is not known why there is such a high rate in An Cheathrú Rua as opposed to other regions in Connemara. It has been revealed in the report that no explanation can be given for this and inquiries should be made about any geographic area pattern associated with high rates of cancer, especially stomach cancer, bowel cancer and skin cancer. The report also states that it should investigate the role of the bacterium Helicobacter Pylori in high rates of stomach cancer in the country.
