Salute our senior and junior GAA teams!! They have qualified for the All-Ireland finals and will represent Galway in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta tournament in Gaoth Dobhair next June Bank Holiday weekend. Already the town is preparing for an exodus north to cheer on its players and enjoy the craic with other team supporters from north south and east.

The Galway competition was held in Páirc an Chathánaigh over the weekend (5/6 May) and a great turnout of support both from home supporters and from fans of teams from maigh Cuilinn, Leitir Móir, Bearna, Leitir Mealláin and Árainn ensured that there was a great buzz and keen rivalry both on and off the pitch.

Games were fiercely but overall fairly contested and margins were frequently low between teams at the final whistle. An Cheathrú Rua seniors and juniors won through to the finals on Sunday after their Saturday encounters. The juniors had a very tight battle with Oileán Árann and towards the end they were level. But a great point from a free kick almost on the sideline clinched it for the team. Score 1-9 to 1-8.

The seniors had an equally tough encounter, getting ahead early but being pegged back in the first half. A few wides did not do justice the local team's efforts but in the second half accuracy was improved and slowly but surely Rua edged ahead. The score at the finish was An Cheathrú Rua 14, Bearna 8.

Congratulations to to the teams, their managements and to the fans who made sure that they didn't lack support. All eyes are now on servicing all vehicles and booking bed and breakfasts for a great weekend socialising with fans from Kerry, Cork, Donegal and Meath over a weekend in Gaoth Dobhair.
