Beckett comes to An Cheathrú Rua

19/7/2012: Jennifer Laverty, Geraldine Plunkett and Melissa Nolan in the Samuel Beckett play "Teacht agus Imeacht" (Come and Go)  presented in Carraroe library, Co Galway, Thursday.

The library was packed with interested spectators come to sample the enigmatic writer's clipped vocabulary in Gaelic

World-renowned word sculptor Samuel Beckett's work was heard in An Cheathrú Rua library in Irish last July 20  when his play "Teacht agus Imeacht" (Come and Go), translated by Gabriel Rosenstock, was put on stage by "Mouth on Fire with the Axis Theatre Group. The library was packed with interested spectators come to sample the enigmatic writer's clipped vocabulary in Gaelic. Although not having not much Irish himself Beckett is reported to have enjoyed listening to the tones and cadences of a translation "Waiting for Godot" in Irish and complimented the Taibhdhearc for its production. Almost three decades later the scribe's unique blend of style, word and silence was heard again as Gaeilge. Adding greatly to the Beckettian atmosphere a bust of the writer was unveiled to the audience prior to the performance. The bust by John Coll was presented to the library on behalf of  Agnes Toohey.
